1864: The Cradle is a graphic novel set during the pivotal Charlottetown Conference held the first week of September 1864. Initially held to discuss a union of the Maritime colonies, the talks were co-opted by John A. Macdonald and other politicians from Ontario and Quebec who wanted a broader union of all British
North America. The ensuing talks led to the Dominion of Canada in 1867. Hesitant to join the initial union, Prince Edward Island waited six years to enter Confederation as Canada’s seventh province in 1873.
Told through the memories of Mercy Coles, The Cradle offers insights into the politics and culture of the time.
